Effective starting Tuesday October 13, 1998, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service will significantly increase their fees for filing a number of forms including some used by China adoptive parents.
To be considered under the old rates, documents must be received by the INS office by Friday October 9, 1998 (Monday 10/12 is the Federal holiday for Columbus Day). The increase in fees is the result of a law passed by congress in 1997 requiring that the fees charged cover the cost of processing the application.
Here are the changes that affect the China adoption community:
|INS Form||Purpose||Old Price||New Price|
|I-600A||Petition to Classify Orphan as an Immediate Relative||$155||$405|
|N-643||Application for Certificate of Citizenship in Behalf of an Adopted Child||$80||$125|
The full listing of all price changes is on the I. N.S. website.
