Changsha (Dolton Hotel)

City: Changsha
Province: Hunan
Month/Year of Travel: October 1998
Travel Route in China: Direct flights between Beijing, Changsha, Guangzhou, Hong Kong.
Name of Hotel: Dolton Hotel
Comments about Hotel: New five-star is located down-town which is almost an hour cab ride from the airport. It has extensive facilities, including business and banking centers. Deluxe rooms are nicer than White Swan so we could have saved money with standard room. Child-safe cribs available at no charge. Very helpful & friendly staff and their English is far better than our Chinese!
Office or Orphanage: Hunan Provincial Adoption and Notary Offices, each about 10 minutes via maroon "Tourist" or red "People's" cabs (10 Yuan, one-way). Our daughter was brought up from Chenzhou, about 5 hours South via train.
Sights to See in this city: Took one-day tour of wooded Yue hills across the Xiang river; Yue Lu Academy (964AD); the brightly colored People's Hall with museum of Shang Dynasty artifacts and Three Kingdoms records carved on wood; and the museum with the mummy of the Marquis Dai's wife and her delicate/ornate possessions. Many more fascinating things to do if you have time: Yangtze River temple/overlook, Mao's birthplace, rural villages/country-side and Hunan Embroidery "Institute".
Baby supplies can be purchased at: Department and Friendship stores within two blocks of the front door, on other side of the double-deck traffic rotary. Bottled drinking water about 2Y each at stores, 3Y at abundant nearby street stalls and 30Y in hotel.
Places to eat we liked: Hotel's first floor restaurant has excellent Hunan (mild) and western dishes. The sauteed pigs ears reminded me of bacon...with cartilage.
Things you ought to know while staying here: Most street vendors have good deals on basic Chinese goods, speak no English and are not used to U.S.$...all part of the fun. Some pick-pockets out at night...keep only a small amount of cash handy. Great "baby appreciation" crowds on street...keep that baby covered!...bilingual introduction cards very helpful.
