Guangzhou (Dongfang Hotel)

City: Guangzhou
Province: Guangdong
Month/Year of Travel: September 1999
Travel Route in China: LA to Guangzhou, Guangzhou to Nanning. We didn't stay overnight on our way there. We flew back to Guangzhou and then LA.
Name of Hotel: Dongfang Hotel
Comments about Hotel: Five star but not as good as China Hotel. China Hotel is foreign owned, White Swan is owned by a Hong Kong tycoon, but Dongfang is Chinese owned with smallish rooms.
Office or Orphanage: U.S. Consulate. We got our baby (our second Chinese adoption) delivered to us in Nanning, but some of the paperwork was done in Beihai City on the coast, 3+ hours drive from Nanning.
Sights to See in this city: The Five Rams Park, the Qingping Market, Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, take a walk around Shamian Island, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, among others.
Baby supplies can be purchased at: Dongfang and China Hotels are on the same block. In between is a shopping mall. There are many shops, including a supermarket, Park 'n' Shop.
Places to eat we liked: Dongfang has its own food court and a western restaurant. There are several restaurants in the courtyard. China Hotel's food court and Hard Rock Cafe are also within walking distance. Within the shopping center mentioned above, there's a McDonald Restaurant and yet another food court selling cheap authentic Chinese food.
Things you ought to know while staying here: If your guide is affiliated with China International Travel Service, a government agency, they will likely direct you to a Chinese government owned expensive hotel. Some of these hotels are Changsha Huatian, owned by Chinese military, Nanning Majestic (Mingyuan Xindu), owned by Guangxi provincial government. When you make an adoption decision, ask your agency about their in-country arrangement. If they use CITS instead local private guide, prepare to pay a lot more while in China.
